Nike’s Adding Color to Its Upgraded Air Force 1 With Gore-Tex and Vibram

The classic sneaker gets winterized with some help from industry leaders.

After appearing in staple triple-black and triple-white colorways, Nike’s winterized Air Force 1 is getting some color, although don’t expect any fluorescent or neon shades on the sneaker just yet.

The latest look to come to the Nike Air Force 1 Low GTX Vibram is a Clay Green/Speed Yellow/Sequoia combination. Shifting from the tonal looks of the aforementioned black and white pairs, this upcoming style is clad in a Clay Green leather upper that is balanced with a darker Sequoia green on the Swoosh, midsole, heel and liner. The mostly two-tone combination is accented with Vibram’s logo on the midsole, which explains the colorway’s inclusion of Speed Yellow.

Aesthetically, the Gore-Tex-lined and Vibram rubber-equipped version of the Bruce Kilgore-designed 1980s basketball shoe doesn’t feature any major changes, which is a big part of what makes the upgrades so appealing to purists. Instead, the updates are mostly under the hood, with a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane and durable Vibram compound that do little to alter the outward appearance of the classic model.

There are, however, a few small modifications from the standard Air Force 1 iteration. The vamp’s perforations are filled in to keep moisture from entering the sneaker, the tongue and heel Nike Air branding is stamped rather than stitched. Gore-Tex branding appears on the collar of the medial side and also on the left shoe’s dubrae. On the bottom, the Air Force 1’s traditional pivot point design has been tweaked with a more aggressive lug setup.

With new colorways appearing frequently, it’s clear that Nike has plans to push the waterproof Air Force 1 Low GTX Vibram throughout the holiday season. Although an release date for the modified model has not been confirmed, retailers including Hibbett have this colorway listed now, which could be an indication of an imminent launch. It’s also worth noting that there’s some discrepancy around the expected retail pricing; Hibbett has the model listed for $150, while some outlets are reporting a higher price tag of $170.

While the exact specifics are being ironed out, the Nike Air Force 1 Low GTX Vibram Clay Green is expected to arrive at retailers soon. The style code for this pair is HV5953-300.
