Sapphire Finishing Mills Ltd. is strengthening its commit to responsible manufacturing.
The Lahore, Pakistan-based mill announced this week it has joined Cascale, the multi-stakeholder organization committed to responsible manufacturing, as a corporate full member.
Formerly known as the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, Cascale is best-known for developing the Higg Index, a tool that helps companies make systematic change by identifying, understanding and measuring areas of improvement. The Higg Index calculates environmental impact from the extraction or production of raw materials, continuing through the manufacturing and finishing process, on to packaging and assembling into a final product.

As a corporate full member, Sapphire’s gains access to the complete Higg Index suite of tools, including the Material Sustainability Index (MSI) and the Product Module (PM). These tools build on Sapphire’s existing use of the Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM) and the Facility Social and Labor Module (FSLM), which have guided its sustainability efforts for several years.
Collectively, Sapphire said “these tools offer a globally recognized, standardized framework for assessing sustainability performance across environmental, social, and product-level dimensions.”
Key focus areas for the mail include transparency and traceability, fair labor practices, responsible water and chemical usage and low-impact manufacturing and emissions reduction.

Sapphire points out that is one of the first few companies from Pakistan to align with the global network. Other Pakistani members include Diamond Fabrics Limited and Artistic Milliners.
