A decade after introducing Raw Research, G-Star is bringing back the innovation atelier, this time under the creative direction of Lisi Herrebrugh and Rushemy Botter.
On Tuesday, the Amsterdam-based brand launched the new 24-piece Raw Research collection.
Described as a “space where daring ideas become future-forward designs,” the design duo, who were appointed G-Star’s creative directors last April, turned to the brand’s past for structure, method and identity for the collection.
“To move forward, we returned to the source, the archives of G-Star. We searched for structure. For DNA. There, we uncovered the brand’s essence: garments built with intention, function and an obsessive care for detail,” Herrebrugh and Botter stated.
The result is an all-gender collection built on anatomic shapes, utilitarian heritage and engineered denim. “Boundary-breaking techniques, fearless ideas, and uncompromising material exploration define the collection,” the brand stated.
The G-Star Elwood is the core inspiration for the collection. Designed in 1996, it was the first jean to consider the body in motion featuring articulated knees and 3D construction. The jean is reimagined as the RR Biker baggy for men and women in a variety of worn-in washes. Elements of the jean are also applied to a maxi skirt and long-sleeve dress.
The premium collection also includes the Biker Kick jacket with slightly flared silhouette, the RR Trucker with hidden pockets, the men’s RR Slim Straight jeans and a selvedge denim blazer.
“We also revisited the green cast denim. Unlike traditional indigo, it carries a cool, industrial tone that evolves with wear,” the designers stated.
Other highlights include reversible bombers and life vest-inspired jacket.
Raw Researched was launched as an experimental atelier in 2016 by G-Star’s former creative director Aitor Throup. The atelier was intended to explore where “creativity and engineering collide” to test the limits of denim fashion. Though Raw Research, Throup presented ideas like bleached selvedge denim and colorful hand-dyed denim.
The new Raw Research collection is available now and retails for $350-$790.
