97,000 Made-in-Kenya Baby and Toddler Jeans Recalled

America’s top product safety watchdog issued a recall for nearly 100,000 pairs of jeans that pose a risk of harming young wearers.

Denim bottoms sold in The Children’s Place stores feature metal snaps that could fall off and potentially choke babies and toddlers, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in statement dated Aug. 10.

The recall applies to two jeans styles, with 97,400 sold in the U.S. and another 1,800 sold in Canada. The affected styles are the Baby and Toddler Boy Basic Stretch Straight Leg Jeans sold in sizes 6-9 months to 5T. Style number 3022341 in the Dustbowl Wash from vendor number 7000541 was sold from September 2022 through March 2023 while 3022342 in the Telford Wash from vendor number 7000541 was carried in stores from January-June this year.

The Children’s Place is contacting affected denim purchasers. Consumers are instructed to keep the jeans away from children and return them to the retailer for a full refund.

A company spokesperson said the safety of children and the products it sells are of “paramount importance.”

“While we have not received any reports of injuries involving these items, we have voluntarily recalled the product out of an abundance of caution,” the rep added.

Children’s apparel products commonly face compliance problems. CPSC recalled flammable kids’ pajamas in June and February while Amazon robes were similarly found to put kids at risk of suffering burn injuries.
