Vaquera codesigners David Moses, Patric DiCaprio, Bryn Taubensee and Claire Sully continued their commentary on American culture with their fall collection. Last season, it was Abercrombie, this time, Tiffany & Co. The show bordered on satire: One girl strutted out “wearing” the iconic blue-branded Tiffany’s jewelry sac and oversize Tiffany’s heart-shaped lockets.
“This collection — it’s about living in the Midwest, thinking, ‘I want to be a New York girl, I want to live this romantic lifestyle — so buying the Tiffany piece will help me get that vibe,’” said DiCaprio to WWD in an interview before the show. “It’s so cheesy — you can’t not be obsessed with that kind of young naïveté. Girls who are obsessed with things that they don’t know about, yet they remain this beacon. It’s, like, ‘I’m stuck here, but I can get taste watching Audrey Hepburn.’”
Elsewhere, they sent out boys in point d’esprit skirts; an American-flag dress with a never-ending train; “Gaultier” bras; inventive shirting; overalls with attached purses and tutus with red moto jackets. Execution aside, there was no lack of imagination and creativity here. It was a refreshing injection of energy and youth so desperately needed in New York.
