James Whitner‘s parent company for A Ma Maniére, Social Status, and the rest of his slate of boutiques has unveiled a new duo of New Balance sneakers, a trio if you count added kids sizing, under the banner “Willful Bias for Education.”
The Whitaker Group x New Balance 990v4 and 998 “Willful Bias for Education” capsule is united by shaggy mint green suede and a campaign continuing the “Unwritten Curriculum” series, highlighting the little lessons learned out in the real world. Both sneakers feature Made in USA construction and a mix of green, gray and black.

More vivid of the two is the 990v4, which mixes two shades of jade green through its suede overlays and midsole. Gray and white form its mesh backdrop, while its outsole is rendered in black.

The 998 sticks with a single shade of jade green and makes greater use of black, including the “N” logo and a couple of leather overlays at the tongue and collar. A few of his of cream are also added to the majority of the midsole and the collar’s plastic reinforcements.
Accompanying the sneakers is a campaign film inspired by the early 2000s in which a man steadily improves his flirting attempts with a woman on a college campus.
The Whitaker Group x New Balance 990v4 and 998 “Willful Bias for Education” will release in phases, beginning with a raffle open now through Monday on the websites for A Ma Maniére, Social Status, APB and Jaide. Jaide’s website will then have first-come, first-served releases on Aug. 7 through its websites and locations in Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C. The remaining boutiques will then add availability Aug. 8 online and in stores. Pricing for both sneakers is set at $220.
