Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan 1 Borrows a Detail From Another of His Most Popular Shoes for This Holiday Release

Elephant print comes over from the Air Jordan 3.

The Air Jordan 1 will take a page from the Air Jordan 3 for a brand-new colorway coming this holiday season.

The Air Jordan 1 High “Sail” is a largely minimalist sneaker, but on the Swoosh, you’ll find the elephant print signature to the Air Jordan 3. This gray panel matches the collar and Wings logo, and the rest of the upper is rendered in white and off-white. Rather than leather, the eyestay is made out of a rougher material, and an unshrouded tongue leaves its foam out for onlookers to see. A sail midsole sits above a translucent outsole with the Flight logo beneath, and rounding out the flourishes is red contrast stitching at the heel to match the tongue branding and an embroidered Jumpman on the lateral toe.

Nothing like the elephant print had ever appeared on a basketball sneaker before the Air Jordan 3 debuted with it in 1988. The animal print came a year after designer Tinker Hatfield brought ostrich print to another sneaker, the Air Safari, the year prior.
