New York-based accessories designer Eddie Borgo touched down in Hong Kong to debut a selection of handbags and his fall jewelry collection in Lane Crawford Friday.
“I love Hong Kong. I think it’s extremely progressive,” exclaimed the designer dressed in a gray Panama hat, blazer and fitted white trousers. “I like this idea that it holds this old world quality to it, but then there’s all this newness with the expats coming and going, and the young people opening shops, restaurants and art galleries.”
While Borgo said his core customers generally fall in the 40 to 50 age bracket, a fashionably dressed young crowd dominated his launch party here. Fans clad in his jewelry swanned around the handbags with angular metal details and necklaces and headpieces inspired by roses and organic forms.
Prices for the bags, launched earlier this year, range from 9,950 Hong Kong dollars to 31,950 Hong Kong dollars, ($1,284 to $4,123) and the jewelry runs from 950 Hong Kong dollars to 14,250 Hong Kong dollars ($123 to $1839).

According to Borgo, his products fill a niche in Asia. “It’s accessible. The price point of the jewelry is almost unbelievable,” he said. “There is a place for us within the market.”
While the designer has cultivated a following in the region through Lane Crawford’s retail outlets since 2008, e-commerce in Asia also spiked recently. “This is a very successful marketplace for us,” he said. “In the last year we’ve grown our [consumer] base throughout Asia by about 30 percent online — it’s been pretty dramatic.”
The brand is projected to hit $12 million in sales by the first quarter of 2016, said Borgo, whose next stop is Shanghai. Plans to take the collections to other cities in China and translate his e-commerce site are also in the pipeline.
