Urban Outfitters’ BDG Taps Isko for Recycled Cotton Denim Workwear

A new denim collection by Urban Outfitters’ BDG brand reflects the industry’s push toward circular and gender-free design.

On July 10, the brand will bow BDG x Isko, a 10-piece collection that incorporates the principles of circular design, including minimal wash processing, recycled cotton content, minimal metal trims and removable shank buttons.

The Isko fabrics used for the workwear-inspired collection incorporate 25-75 percent recycled cotton yarns made from cutting-room waste. One item is free of virgin cotton, instead using 75 percent recycled cotton and 25 percent viscose.

All pieces are washed using innovative technology to reduce the chemical, water, and energy footprint so that each item has a low environmental impact score. The development of these washes was done with the help of the experts at Isko’s Creative Room London, the Turkish mill’s R&D hub for U.K. brands and designers.

Melissa Clement, Isko’s head of product development, said the two companies “hold a shared core value and goal in creating denim garments and collections that remain desirable to shoppers without having to compromise on design, style, quality or lifespan of the garment.”

“This was an exciting opportunity we were keen to explore,” said Cherie Nelson, senior head of buying and wholesale at Urban Outfitters. “Isko is the leading denim mill and has new technologies that allow us to delve into sustainability even further for our denim ranges. The collection is elevated and thoughtfully designed.”

The genderless collection includes an indigo jean jacket, cargo jeans with contrasting pockets, a pieced button-down shirt, pleated trouser jeans, a color-blocked zip-up hoodie and carpenter jeans. An undyed zip-up jacket, overalls and carpenter jeans are also part of the line.

Dwayne Coleman, a British artist known for using upcycled denim and paint techniques that have inspired denim surface treatments, designed the collection’s finishing details. Elements like wildflower embroideries, patching and loose threads are used throughout.

The collection will be available on Urban Outfitters’ e-commerce site and in key stores in the EU.
