When it comes to challenging tradition, G-Star Raw has found a like-minded Jacques Agbobly, the founder of the namesake label, Agbobly.
The Dutch brand unveiled a new collaboration with Agbobly, a woman’s low-rise flare jean with a detachable corset with button fastening. The two-in-one piece is part of G-Star’s “The Denim” series, an ongoing initiative that showcases denim as a canvas for storytelling and cultural dialogue.
Previous collaborators have included KNWLS and Ottolinger, resulting in jeans with inside-out constructions and reworked Elwood fits.
Founded in 2020, Agbobly is known for combining tradition and innovation to make vibrant knitwear and sculptural denim. The Brooklyn based independent design studio highlights Black, queer and immigrant narratives and their cultural contributions.
Elements of womanhood and empowerment inspired Agbobly’s design with G-Star as well as visits to the brand’s archive in Amsterdam.
In an interview with G-Star, the designer said a vintage back brace in the archive led to his corset design. “It’s about support and strength, turning something traditionally seen as restrictive into a symbol of empowerment,” he said.
The garment is made with a fabric from Saitex Fabrics in Vietnam and has received a C2C Certified Material Health Certificate V4.0 at the Gold level. The 12 oz. denim is made with 74 percent regenerative cotton, 25 percent recycled cotton and one percent elastane for comfort stretch.
The brand’s Neo Raw treatment preserves the crisp look of raw denim, slows down the fading process, and helps the fabric mold more quickly and comfortably to the body.
The corset/jean hybrid is available now and retails for 250 euros (approximately $292).
