Global textile manufacturer Milliken is expanding its presence in South Carolina.
The company—which is headquartered in Spartanburg, S.C. and has more than 70 locations in 15 countries—has acquired the assets of Cheraw, South Carolina-based Highland Industries, Inc. The acquisition includes Highland’s corporate office, as well as its design and production facility in Cheraw.
Highland has specialized in the production of performance textiles for automotive, industrial and government and military use, including airbag fabrics, woven reinforcement fabrics and circular knit fabrics. Milliken said this acquisition will allow the company to deepen its domestic production capability.
“This acquisition bolsters the capabilities of Milliken’s technical textiles business to benefit our customers,” said Halsey Cook, president and CEO of Milliken. “We remain committed to the U.S. textile industry and grounded in our belief that precision manufacturing of innovative, high-performance materials is crucial for industrial resilience.”
The Highland facility will become a hub for Milliken’s technical textile weaving and knitting operations in the region. Milliken has more than 25 locations in South Carolina, including textile and chemical manufacturing plants, showrooms and its corporate headquarters. The company’s facility in Cherokee County, just north of Spartanburg, underwent a $27.4 million expansion two years ago. That plant focuses on textile production for workwear, military and flame-resistant apparel.
With the addition of the Highland facility, Milliken will be able to expand its textile product offerings. Currently, the company produces textiles for everything from bedding and table linens to performance apparel and military fabrics.
“In addition to reinforcing current operations, acquiring Highland adds new offerings to the technical textiles portfolio,” said Allen Jacoby, EVP and president of Milliken’s technical textiles business. “Highland provides important assets to help us better serve our customers and opens the door to new growth opportunities.”
