It was an unexpectedly playful mix at MM6 Maison Martin Margiela, as the design team worked a culture clash between American pop and traditional Japanese culture. The team looked to the Old West for inspiration with bandana prints, suede chaps, fringe jackets and a strong denim line, most noteworthy, a baggy cropped patchwork pant. Meanwhile, Obi belts over coats, quilted vests and fluid satin suits and dresses gave a nod to Asian motifs. The house played with innerwear-as-outerwear references, of note — and true to the Margiela aesthetic — was the slipdress worn under a translucent baglike dress. The collection played with proportions — pieces were either oversize or shrunken — but somehow it all worked in a very animated way.MM6 Maison Martin Margiela: It was an unexpectedly playful mix at MM6 Maison Martin Margiela, as the design team worked a culture clash between American pop and traditional Japanese culture.
