During his presentation, Jonathan Simkhai recounted being inspired by broken glass: “The emotional feeling of breaking glass, the way light reflects off it, the danger in broken glass.”
Simkhai executed the idea in geometrically cut lace appliquéd over mesh, perforated patterns cut into pants and long, jagged-edge skirts, giving ladylike silhouettes polish with a sporty edge. It worked beautifully on midiskirts, body-skimming dresses and a shrunken jacket.
He also photographed pieces of glass and manipulated the images in Photoshop to create a striking motif that turned up on burnout brocades and knit intarsias. Simkhai juggled proportions as well — most noteworthy were cropped tops over longer skirts.
