While the designs of self-proclaimed nomad Ulla Johnson feel like a collection of pieces found throughout the world — think Indian handicrafts, Peruvian knits — for resort the designer brought it back home. “We did a real exploration of the all-American prep sportswear classics with chambray denim, madras, tennis sweaters,” she said. The result: soft, feminine versions of the staples, done in Johnson’s artisanally accented language. A white tennis dress is tiered, giving it a flirtatious turn, while classic striped shirting material is cut into ruffly, girly silhouetted tops and dresses, and made in silk instead of cotton. Even the classic white sneaker was given the designer’s artisanal treatment, sporting tasseled lacing.
