One imagines Adam Selman and John Waters would have much to talk about — and not just because they both have creepy mustaches. They share a general passion for bad taste handled with humor and kitsch.
Selman borrowed from Waters’ canon of Sixties hair hoppers and misbehaved spoiled brats with retro clothes for bubblegum bad girls and vamps: acid-colored ginghams trimmed in the fakest of fake fur; a clingy pink and “mauvelous” ribbed-knit dress; a polo dress dotted with white shoe-string bows; a slinky black gown fit for Elvira if she preferred a high neckline. The deliberate tackiness is part of the fun, but Selman has to be sure to pad the punch line with substance.
