Sofía Vergara tried her hand at the “guava-girl” summer makeup trend for an event in Madrid on Wednesday. The 52-year-old actress, best known for her 11-year stint as Gloria on “Modern Family,” was introducing her sun care brand, Toty, to the country after its initial launch in North America two years ago.
For the event, held inside the Four Seasons Hotel, Vergara flushed her cheeks with a color cross between a guava and a peach. The glowy base, however, complemented a darker, more burnt, red-toned shadow stamped on her eyes. The bold color also brought out the hues in her floral-painted, strapless gown, as well as the pink-orange backdrop lined on the back edge of the carpet outside the event.

In true Vergara fashion, her eyebrows were kept thick, brushed and filled in to match the medium brown coloring of her long, wavy hair. She donned a muted fuchsia shade on her lips with an earth-toned lip liner and no gloss. The color on her lips wasn’t completely dissimilar to the shimmer on her lids and under her eyes; only the shadow above her nose was tinged with dusty brown and specks of amber.
Vergara has been known to collaborate with makeup artist Sabrina Bedrani, the talent also responsible for some of Mariska Hargitay’s and Greta Gerwig’s beauty looks. However, it’s not certain Bedrani was with Vergara in Spain to craft this particular aesthetic.
The auspicious “guava-girl” obsession has led the beauty world down a rabbit hole with no end in sight. Tropical fruit-themed skin, makeup and fragrance essentials by major brands such as Summer Fridays, Tarte Cosmetics, Eadem and Ellis Brooklyn are piling up, and summer is just getting started. Tarte released its guava-inspired products — a Maracuja Juicy Lip Tint in two different shades, a Shimmer Glass Plump and a Melt Lip Mask — in collaboration with Dunkin’ in June. At the time, founder Maureen Kelly told WWD: “Guava is having a true color story moment. It’s iced drinks, glossy lips and a zero-apology approach to having fun.”
Toty, Vergara’s brand founded with Cantabria Labs, offers sun and skin care-based products, as well as a few makeup items. However, Toty hasn’t debuted any “guava-girl” products yet. In March, Toty hit a major milestone, launching its first partnership with retailer Thirteen Lune, which dedicates 90 percent of its inventory to brands founded by people of color.
In a statement to WWD, Vergara expressed excitement about the joint venture. “They believe that inclusivity starts with the ownership and amplifying founders that represent the communities, which is something that I’ve always believed in,” she said of Thirteen Lune. “And they have goals that we like, like having beauty retail ensuring shelves reflecting the diversity of the beauty consumers — they have so much in common to our business. So, we thought it was perfect.”
