Variety celebrated the release of its “Hitmakers” issue on Saturday, saluting its cover stars with a Los Angeles brunch. The magazine’s annual list recognizes the biggest songs of the year, which in 2023 includes tunes penned by Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter and Boygenius. Carpenter was handed the Rising Artist Award, while Boygenius — an indie rock troupe comprising Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker — took home the honor for Group of the Year.

Boygenius opted for a black and white color scheme. Bridgers’ cutout gown featured a bow embellishment, which the singer matched to a statement hair accessory. Dacus sported a blazer minidress and Mary Janes, while Baker donned a Western-inspired suit embellished with fringe.
Olivia Rodrigo
Rodrigo, the recipient of the Storyteller of the Year Award, favored florals in a Carolina Herrera frock inspired by one of the label’s spring 2024 designs.
SZA
SZA wore a plunging floral maxidress by Zimmermann, which also featured lace panels. The “Kill Bill” singer, who received the evening’s top honor, Hitmaker of the Year, accessorized with powder pink lace-up boots.
Sabrina Carpenter
Carpenter wore a black satin halter dress, accessorizing with gold jewelry and a hair bow.
Maren Morris
Maren Morris, who took home the Changemaker Award, selected a red off-the-shoulder gown by Vivienne Westwood, pairing it with strappy high-heeled sandals. The singer also added on a pair of chunky Mega Jewelry hoops.
