Outside the Ray Dolby Ballroom on Sunday night in Hollywood, actors, actresses, directors and more paid homage to mid-20th-century glamour in honor of the 16th Governors Awards hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Stars such as Sydney Sweeney and Kate Hudson channeled the beauty of both Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, styling soft waves cut by a defined side part in their bobs. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande continued her streak of Audrey Hepburn-inspired looks with an elegant updo positioned on the crown of her head.
Ahead, WWD takes a look at all the Hollywood hair moments on the black and gold carpet, from Sweeney to Jennifer Lopez.

Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney’s Old Hollywood bob has entered the chat.
Hot off the heels of her “Christy” premiere press tour, the 28-year-old actress stepped out for the star-studded affair in Hollywood with drawn-out curls circling her face. Light reflected off her muddy blond coloring, catching her bright highlights. Her bob, which she debuted in late October, is the work of celebrity hair artist Glen Oropeza, also known as known as @glencocoforhair online. Oropeza is also to thank for her Old Hollywood hairstyle at the Governors Awards on Sunday.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande’s penchant for bringing Audrey Hepburn’s feminine beauty into the 21st century continues. The “Wicked” star arrived at the awards ceremony on Sunday with a twisted updo, the same style mold she’s been playing with throughout the “Wicked: For Good” press tour this month. Here, her side bangs were slicked to the right of her forehead.
Grande has been partnering with hair artist Alyx Liu, as well as makeup artist Michael Anthony and renowned stylist Law Roach.
Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson paired a mint green satin gown with a hairstyle equally as bold and elegant outside the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood on Sunday. Working with artist Marcus Francis, Hudson evoked Marlene Dietrich with ripple waves in her chin-length bob. The style bore a similar resemblance to Sydney Sweeney’s for the event, only the 46-year-old “Bride Wars” star styled curls that were much more defined.
Zoey Deutch
Zoey Deutch arrived at the 16th Governors Awards on Sunday night with an aesthetic like the late Grace Kelly. Her chocolate brown hair, most likely styled by Kiley Fitzgerald, was parted on the right side of her head; her ends flipped and curled inward.
Deutch partnered with Fitzgerald for her appearance at the Zimmermann party in Los Angeles on Friday, donning a made-to-look messy bun with her shorter layers left out in the front. WWD has contacted Fitzgerald to confirm she styled Deutch for the awards on Sunday, too.
Nina Hoss
Nina Hoss left no strand untouched at the Governors Awards on Sunday in Hollywood; her pixie cut gelled and brushed in waves on both sides of her head. The style was reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn, Jean Seberg and Twiggy, but with added movement and texture.
Hoss has often collaborated with hair artist Hailey Adickes Purpura; however, she was unable to work with her for the Sunday night event.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez mixed hair aesthetics from the past and present, tying her medium brown hair back in a loose bun with strands spilling out on the side. The look appeared as if she’d styled it herself, only she tapped Lorenzo Martin to do so. Martin famously boasts a star-studded client list, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Heidi Klum, and of course, Lopez.
