Soon, the season of sun-kissed layers and saltwater-drenched curls will be over, and new styles will settle in for fall.
Hair trends, specifically, will say goodbye to beach waves and untamable frizz, giving rise to more hydrating looks, comprised of shaggy cuts and slicked-back buns. Other aesthetics, like the burgeoning bob trend led by A-listers such as Halle Berry, Leslie Bibb and Alexandra Daddario this summer, won’t go anywhere. And while the temperature is guaranteed to drop at some point, stylist Jacob Rozenberg, a Redken artistic ambassador who works with Meghann Fahy and Rose Byrne, is assured the warmth would be preserved in the form of strawberry blond and copper hair coloring come September.
“I have seen a big shift from more high contrast colors to more tonal, warmer tones,” he told WWD. “I just feel like natural colors and keeping within a close range of your own natural color is just more what we’re going to see this fall.”

For blonds, this means the dynamic shading won’t be so stark; it’ll be “blended,” Rozenberg said. Brunettes, on the other hand, will move away from an “ashy” aesthetic. “You know, ash is never going to go away, especially because it’s there to control brass,” Rozenberg explained. “But if you could get a beautiful lift in hair and get it to a great bright gold, there’s something so beautiful about that as long as you have a root melt, that makes it feel natural.”
One style Rozenberg is hoping to leave in summer 2025 is “the Scandinavian hairline,” a coloring technique that involves lightening the hairline, specifically baby’s hair around the face. “I think it’s really specific who that’s meant for,” he said. “And if you are darker than a level eight or seven, I really think if you do a Scandinavian style hairline to root smudge is going to make it feel much more luxurious.”
Here, five fall 2025 hair trends to look out for, according to runway reports, red carpets, stylists and TikTok search.
The Shag
Originated in the late 1960s and popularized in the 1970s, the shag cut is comprised of short, choppy layers around the face, muting the body of hair on the sides. In the front, blunt bangs cover the forehead, followed by jaw-length pieces in front of the ears. The shag, thought of as an androgynous style, was seen on stars such as Jane Fonda and Stevie Nicks before Jennifer Aniston put her own spin on the cut as Rachel Green in “Friends.”
Here, Aniston’s shag appeared almost like a waterfall of layers, bluntly chopped just under her chin. Now, the shag seems to be reverting back to its original form with A-listers such as Suki Waterhouse and Selena Gomez donning the look in recent weeks. A shag revival is also ripe amid the return of the bohemian aesthetic thanks to Chemena Kamali’s Chloé.
The Slick Back
Born in the heyday of the “clean girl” aesthetic trend on TikTok, “the slick back” assumes its wearer is poised, put together and “en vogue.” The style — achieved using a boar bristle brush, gel and some hairspray — hit the runways hard this fall 2025 couture season, seen on models such as Alex Consani.
As the weather drops, the slick back won’t go anywhere, but the tools used to create it may change. Rather than lathering the hair in gel or wax, women online have been combing hair masks through for a gentle, more hydrating alternative.
Ratty Bangs
Meet the ratty bang, the latest iteration of the viral curtain bangs. Ratty bangs are wispy, tangled, short in the front and combed to the sides, and they blend like longer, face-framing layers would.
Jenna Ortega was recently seen out with a similar grungy fringe cut for the “Wednesday” Season Two premiere in New York City. There, her bangs weren’t short enough to be considered bottleneck or curtain bangs, but they had just as much dimension and movement, accentuating her trademark “tired girl” aesthetic, too.
The French Bob
From red carpet premieres to runways and street style looks, bobs have dominated this summer, and the trend shows no signs of slowing in the seasons ahead. Jessica Williams is the latest celebrity to don the short style at the “Shrinking” panel at the TV Academy’s Inaugural Televerse Festival after A-listers such as Alexandra Daddario and Pamela Anderson made the chop, too.
Moving into fall, the bob will likely prosper and take on new forms. “Bob blindness” — a concept used to describe the self-delusion of thinking a bob is too long when it’s not — has been coming up in conversations a lot among bob wearers more recently, which could lead to a larger movement toward the French bob, a finer chop above the chin.
Strawberry-Copper Coloring
Pumpkin spice might just be making its move on beauty. According to Rozenberg, copper coloring is poised to be fall’s biggest hair color trend, and he may be onto something. Stars such as Keke Palmer, Leighton Meester and Parker Posey have been moving away from darker brunette and cherry-cola tones toward the fiery hue instead. Although Rozenberg predicts the color will resemble more of a strawberry blond than an amber or orange.
