One of the four major tennis tournaments held annually around the world, the U.S. Open began its 143rd edition on Monday in New York City. The championship will be held through Sept. 10, with five main events — men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The U.S. Open 2023 will also include wheelchair tennis events and a junior tournament.
The tournament takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, one of the largest tennis facilities in the world. It features 22 courts, including four show courts with retractable roofs, which allow play to continue even in inclement weather.
The U.S. Open is also known for drawing numerous celebrity guests every year. Michelle Obama, Queen Latifah, Hilaria Baldwin, Lindsey Vonn, Ariana DeBose, J Balvin, Sara Bareilles, Alec Baldwin and Katie Couric are some of the names that showed up for the opening day of the tournament.
