Zoë Kravitz has been a staple on the Met Gala red carpet since 2008, when she first attended the traditional event.
The daughter of music legend Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet has come into her own as a Hollywood star, having starred in the “Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them” franchise and HBO’s hit series “Big Little Lies.”
While she’s been adding acting credits to her resume, Kravitz has also established herself as a style reference. According to a report from Google in 2022, the actress is the most searched Met Gala red carpet style star since 2004. Here, WWD takes a closer look at her Met Gala style through the years.

2008 – Superheroes: Fashion & Fantasy
For the occasion, Kravitz wore a 1920s-inspired green velvet dress with a feather boa with a tassel on the end, channeling “The Great Gatsby.”
2010 – American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity
Kravitz accompanied American designer Alexander Wang to the event. For the occasion, she wore a minimalist ensemble from the designer, with details including a sleeveless white bodice and black floor-length skirt. She accessorized with a snakeskin-embossed clutch bag.
2014 – Charles James: Beyond Fashion
In 2014, the Costume Institute celebrated British-American designer Charles James, who was considered one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. Kravitz went for a classic American style wearing a deep red Michael Kors gown with a thigh-high slit. She also sported a short blond hairdo to the annual extravaganza.
2015 – China: Through the Looking Glass
Kravitz wore a custom chainmail gown by Alexander Wang. The semi-sheer gown would be a precursor to a more revealing dress Kravitz would wear for a Met Gala that was yet to come.
2016 – Manus x Machina
Under the craftsmanship of Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli and his then co-creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, the brand created a dress for Kravitz that was best described as gothic fairy-inspired. The black minidress had an oversized bow in the back, creating the impression of fairy wings. Kravitz accessorized the look with an embroidered masquerade mask. Her shoes were adorned with tulle.
2017 – Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between
Kravitz got pretty in pink for the Met Gala honoring Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, marking the second time the event honored a living designer after Yves Saint Laurent. Kravitz wore a custom Oscar de la Renta dress designed by the brand’s co-creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, who joined her at the event. The pink dress had black ruffle trim at the bust and around the small cape and a matching pink statement train.
2018 – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination
Kravitz wore a black lace dress by Saint Laurent to the 2018 Met Gala. One side of the dress left her entire thigh exposed, redefining the meaning of the thigh-high slit.
2019 – Camp: Notes on Fashion
Saint Laurent dressed Kravitz again for the 2019 Met Gala. While the theme was camp, Kravitz took a minimalist approach to color in black but added some flare in the all-sequin dress with a heart-shaped cutout at the bodice and sequin pasties on her bust.
2021 – In America: A Lexicon of Fashion
Out of all Kravitz’s Saint Laurent dresses she’s worn to the Met Gala, this one has proven the most viral online. The sheer metal dress was paired with a crystal-embellished thong.
