New Balance Is Adding New Materials to Its On-trend Low-profile Sneaker

Patent leather and metallic synthetics appear on the 204L.

New Balance has found its latest hit sneaker in the low-profile, 1970s-inspired 204L. One of the more talked-about new models of 2025 will soon release in several new looks, including one patent leather-adorned that arrives stateside next week.

The three upcoming New Balance 204L styles include Black/Timberwolf, Silver Metallic/Black and Silver Metallic/Sage Green. The Black/Timberwolf is the outlier of the bunch, introducing patent leather overlays in place of the suede materials that have been featured on the shoe thus far. It uses an almost-all-black design, one that is broken up only by a  nearly white Timberwolf shade on the liner, branding and on the outsole’s strike path design.

The other two styles, Silver Metallic/Black and Silver Metallic/Sage Green, introduce metallic synthetics and flat leather to the on-trend design. The former mixes silver and black across a white mesh base with hints of cream on the midsole and shoelaces while the latter uses the same silver and cream shades but replaces black with a soft Sage Green.

The 204L debuted in July with a Mushroom/Arid Stone colorway and each style thus far has been quick to sell out. The model is a melding of different New Balance eras, blending the low-profile build of the brand’s ‘70s running sneakers with its more tech-laden 2000s offerings.

In addition to its in-line colorways, the 204L has received a three-sneaker collaboration with Ronnie Fieg’s Kith. Japanese fashion label Auralee also has two 204L collabs on the way for its spring 2026 collection.

The New Balance 204L Black/Timberwolf (U204LMRA) will be released from newbalance.com and select retailers on Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. ET. The sneaker retails for $120. As for the Silver Metallic/Black (U204LSWD) and Silver Metallic/Sage Green (U204LSWB) styles, both pairs are currently available from select overseas stockists.
