New Balance’s 1906L sneaker loafer is nearing its first birthday, although it’s been in the limelight for much longer with months of debates on its merits leading up to the actual release. The original “Metallic Silver” colorway restocked for the first time earlier this month, and it’ll quickly be succeeded by two brand-new renditions in natural colors.
The New Balance 1906L “Beige” and “Olive” will release simultaneously at the end of the month with monochrome looks. Both feature pebbled leather overlays atop their mesh bases and are further united by their black outsoles. Subtly different shades of their namesake colors are then used throughout the rest of the sneaker, TPU heel cage and all.

In its nearly year of existence, the 1906L has been subject to several material shifts. Options have been created with and without mesh, and feature a range of leathers, including suede, patent, and metallic synthetics. The silhouette has also been at the forefront of a micro-trend, as it was followed up by Hoka’s Speed Loafer in January and more recently a near-lookalike from Skechers.

The 1906L is itself a remix of a remix, the 1906R. The latter silhouette is a revamped version of the original 1906 from 2009. For its highly successful relaunch in 2022, the 1906R borrowed the sole unit from the 860v2. Most of the DNA was retained for the 1906L, only with its tongue removed and a penny loafer saddle added over foot.
New Balance will continue its hybrid methodology soon with a 1890 sneaker moccasin with full-length Abzorb cushioning.
The New Balance 1906L “Beige” and “Olive” will release on July 30 through New Balance’s website and select third-party retailers. Pricing for both is set at $160.
