Maria Sharapova hit the U.S. Open on Monday in a pair of attention-grabbing shoes, a brand-new iteration of Nike’s divisive Shox silhouette.
The Nike Shox Z features the same visible technology in the sole as the original sneaker released in 2000, but comes with a slightly lower heel. The sporty style offers a more formal, sophisticated appearance than previous variations. Sharapova showcased a custom interpretation featuring a glossy black patent upper adorned with dainty bejeweled bows on the toes, which sit just below the lacing system.

At first glance, the sneakers appear to be very similar to dress shoes. The five-time Grand Slam champion, who was just inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday, styled the bold footwear with an elegant black dress that skimmed her shins. She also wore a black short-sleeve blazer that combined exaggerated shoulders with an asymmetric hemline and a single silver button closure at the waist.

When it was time to speak at the Tennis Hall of Fame Ring ceremony after posing on the royal blue carpet, she removed the blazer, revealing a better look at the dress. Also courtesy of Nike, it featured a subtle Swoosh on the chest, a subtle sparkly trim along the high scoop neckline, and an open back. A cinched waist and pleated skirt with an underlay completed the frock.
Sharapova styled her brown hair down in delicate waves, with a smattering of gleaming silver bow pins on one side that matched the bow accents on her shoes. Tiny bow earrings, a silver cuff bracelet, and several rings finished off her thoughtfully curated ensemble for the occasion.
The Nike Shox Z is expected to release later this year, with five colorways on offer: black, red, tan, chocolate brown, and silver. Photos of the low-profile, almond-toe sneakers display textured uppers crafted in a mesh-like material, unlike Sharapova’s patent pair.
