Kristen Stewart Defies the Cannes Film Festival Dress Code With Sneakers on the Red Carpet

It wouldn't be the first time Stewart has paired sneakers with a Chanel look.

Devoted sneakerhead Kristen Stewart didn’t care to adhere to the footwear dress code on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet on Saturday when she attended the premiere for “Full Phil” — the actress eschewed formal shoes in favor of canvas trainers to accent her Chanel gown.

Stewart — who has previously worn sneakers at the festival and has spoken out against gendered dress code expectations for the event — looked to be wearing the Ruby Brown 3306 Dames sneakers on the tapis rouge. It was an all-black lace-up style with silver grommets, which she paired with white socks. The sneakers served as a casual, sporty accent to her red and black intricately patterned Chanel gown, which comes from the fall 2026 collection by creative director Matthieu Blazy.

The Cannes Film Festival has a complex history with flat and casual footwear. In 2015, the controversy known as “Flatgate” caused a stir after a group of women were denied entry to the film “Carol” for wearing flats. The festival then released a statement emphasizing that the dress code did not discriminate based on heel height for women or men, and that “the festival’s hosts and hostesses were reminded of it.”

However, sneakers are still considered a no-go. Pertaining to footwear for Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings, the current dress code calls for “elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel — no sneakers.”

But Stewart is not the only high-profile guest to have worn sneakers on the red carpet. Spike Lee, for example, opted for all-black Jordan Spizikes last year to go with his Knicks-themed pinstriped suit by Cointel at the premiere for “Highest 2 Lowest.”
