Hawaiian-inspired footwear brand OluKai is tapping into island culture and the nostalgia of comfort food through a collaboration with Spam, presenting a limited-edition collection of flip-flops launching Monday.

Centering OluKai’s bestselling ‘Ohana sandal, the OluKai x Spam Collection features two styles, one inspired by Spam musubi — a popular snack in Hawai’i, where more Spam products are consumed per capita than any other state in the U.S — and the other inspired by the recognizable can containing the meat product.

Spam musubi is characterized by seaweed wrapped around a block of rice and grilled Spam, and the Musubi Edition sandal is directly influenced by the layers of the snack — featuring textured strap details and a color-blocked design mirroring rice, nori and a slice of Spam. Meanwhile, the Heritage Colorway is a tribute to the Spam can, making use of the blue and yellow color combination in two different ways.

“Spam products are a true staple and a meaningful part of Hawai’i’s food culture,” said Matt Lindauer, senior vice president of creative for OluKai, in a statement. “Bringing that spirit into one of our most loved sandals felt like a natural way to celebrate island life.”

As with all OluKai products, each pair supports the company’s mission to give back to the communities it finds inspiration in.
