Julia Fox channeled cinematic nostalgia in New York City on Monday, wearing thigh-high slouchy brown boots and a film-inspired midi dress by Jean Paul Gaultier. The actor was photographed en route to “CBS Mornings,” where she was promoting “The Trainer,” a dark comedy about a struggling fitness trainer that played at Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend.

Her thigh-high leather boots had a relaxed fold at the ankle, with squared pointed toes and a mid-height heel. The textured, russet-toned leather gave them a slightly broken-in look, echoing the sepia-toned collage of the rest of her outfit. While the boots appeared to end just at the hem of her dress, during the show, Fox revealed the true thigh-high level of the boots while sitting alongside “The Trainer” writer and star Vito Schnabel.

Fox paired the slouchy leather thigh-high boots with an archival strapless mesh midi dress from Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring 1997 collection. The piece featured sepia-toned collaged prints of Old Hollywood stars and French cinema stills — a visual through line that echoed the boots’ palette and worn-in feel.

She finished the look with a structured brown satchel in a slightly darker leather. The bag featured rigid top handles, gold-tone hardware and a boxy silhouette that introduced architectural contrast to the otherwise fluid styling. She wore her hair was long and straight, with no visible accessories or jewelry save for a pink manicure.

Footwear has played a defining role in Fox’s recent public appearances. In January, she wore Dsquared2’s archival Skate Moss boots from the brand’s fall 2011 runway collection during an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” pairing the bold silhouette with white tights, briefs and a fur coat. At the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March, she opted for nude pumps alongside a sheer Dilara Fındıkoğlu gown referencing “The Birth of Venus.”

Fox frequently works with stylist Briana Andalore, whose clients also include Dove Cameron, Coco Jones and JT of City Girls.

Fox isn’t alone in her affection for slouchy boots as of late. Tracee Ellis Ross sported Balmain’s 1950s-inspired slouch boots at the recent “Black Hair Reimagined” at the beginning of May, while Jaden Smith challenged menswear norms in avant-garde Louis Vuitton slouch silhouettes that blurred gender lines later that month at the designer’s resort show.
