National Spinning Co. Inc. has elected Behnam Pourdeyhimi, Klopman distinguished professor of textile materials and the associate dean for industry research and extension at North Carolina State University, to its board.
Pourdeyhimi, who also serves as director of The Nonwovens Institute at North Carolina State, received his doctorate from Leeds University in Leeds, England, in 1982 and has held former positions at Cornell University, the University of Maryland and Georgia Tech.
Pourdeyhimi is well-known and respected in the fields of textiles, fiber science, nonwovens and biomaterials. In addition to his own research and teaching, he has been a consultant to over 30 major research institutions and corporations.
James Chesnutt, chairman of National Spinning Co., said of Behnam’s appointment, “His input will be invaluable as we continue to expand our footprint in nonwovens and as our legacy yarn business evolves. Behnam’s breadth of experience and contacts will serve all our operating divisions well.”

In addition to Chesnutt and Pourdeyhimi, the board consists of Morgan Miller, emeritus chairman; Jim “Boot” Booterbaugh, president; H. Robert “Bob” Miller, vice chairman; Linda Fanton, chief financial officer; former ceo Henry “Buster” Humphreys, and Julie Leff, a private investor.
National Spinning, an employee-owned company founded in 1921, is best known as a yarn spinner and dyer, supplying yarn for apparel, home furnishings, consumer, protective and industrial uses. It has spinning facilities in Beulaville amd Whiteville, N.C. and a dyeing facility in Burlington, N.C. In apparel, its specializes in sweaters and knitted accessories, hosiery and circular knits.
In addition, the Hampton Art subsidiary in Washington, N.C., supplies wholesale consumer craft items including decorative rubber stamps, paper products, wood products and glass beads. The Carolina Nonwovens subsidiary in Maiden, N.C., that opened last year and supplies air-laid and needled thermo-bonded pads and rolls for acoustic and thermal insulation and mattress components.
