He’s been called “The People’s Pope,” and when Pope Francis arrived in New York, the people came out to see him — along Fifth Avenue, in Central Park and near Madison Square Garden, where he concluded his two-day visit Friday night with a Mass. His admirers wore everything from finely tailored Italian suits and chic dresses to artfully frayed jeans and T-shirts, but they were united in their mission to wave back as he made his way through the streets in his Pope mobile.
As for Francis, he’s a man of simple sartorial tastes, favoring sensible black leather shoes cobbled by a friend in Buenos Aires and a plain black-banded Swatch watch. Humble, like the Pope himself.
