PARIS — Sustainability continues to be a key focus for Europe’s activewear giants. As part of its five-year Environmental Strategy published alongside its 2010 sustainability report on Tuesday, Adidas Group said that it plans by 2015 to use 40 percent “Better Cotton,” with the aim of being 100 percent “Better Cotton”-friendly in its collections by 2018.
The Herzogenaurach, Germany-based athletic brand in 2005 co-founded the Better Cotton Initiative program, along with a group of brands including H&M and Ikea, aimed at taking sustainable cotton mainstream by improving the entire cotton producing system, including reducing water consumption and pesticide quantities and implementing crop rotation to improve soil quality. With the program still in its pilot phase, Adidas hopes in 2012 to introduce product made using “Better Cotton.”

In 2010, for instance, the group’s headquarters in Germany worked together with five sites in North America to create a shared environmental management system, certified to ISO 14001, geared to both global target-setting and day-to-day environmental management at site level.
