From the Archive: Inside Karl Lagerfeld’s 1983 Chanel Couture Debut

It could be said that Karl Lagerfeld had already auditioned for his role with the house of Chanel years before the atelier confirmed his appointment. The designer, known for his stellar fashion vocabulary, was a master at interpreting brands he collaborated with, including Chloe and Fendi, positioning each distinctly, ensuring none overshadowed the other.

In 1983, Lagerfeld made his debut at Chanel, marking both his initial foray into high fashion and the beginning of his legendary tenure. Speaking to WWD ahead of his show, Lagerfeld, as always, was candid about his inspirations and shortcomings. His reflections included an ode to Chanel’s 1920s and 1930s timeline, specifically noting the varied hemlines that once defined her work. “She did hundreds of lengths,” he remarked. To honor and reenergize the house’s legacy, he modernized the staid below-the-knee three-piece suit, which Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel had first popularized upon her return to fashion in 1954, updating it with a longer and leaner silhouette. The collection, presented in mostly black, red and white, was accessorized with precise copies of Chanel’s late-1930s jewelry, and a reimagined version of her iconic two-tone slingback pumps, reflecting codes the designer established as early as 1912. Optimistically, Lagerfeld asked WWD during the interview, “It’s very Chanel, no?”

Over the course of 36 years, Lagerfeld cemented his legacy as Chanel’s creative director, strategically reinventing the Chanel woman—even if, on his first outing, he wasn’t entirely sure Madame herself would approve.

Today, Chanel remains one of the longest-standing and most successful European luxury fashion brands. The house is set to welcome its newest creative director, Matthew Blazy, who succeeds Virginie Viard (2019-2024) and will debut his first Chanel ready-to-wear collection during Paris Fashion Week in Spring 2026.
