SCAVARDA TO LEAVE MACY POST
NEW YORK — Margo Scavarda, who joined Macy’s West a little over a year ago as general merchandise manager and senior vice president of cosmetics and fragrances, is leaving the store.
Scavarda, who has been a force in West Coast cosmetics retailing for over a decade, said Thursday that she plans to step down by the end of the month.
Her duties are being assumed by Tim Adams, general merchandise manager.
Michelle Williams will continue as vice president and divisional merchandise manager, reporting to Adams.
Scavarda joined Macy’s from The Broadway in December 1995, when the California chain was acquired by Macy’s parent, Federated Department Stores.
“Her expertise in the cosmetics industry and her vast knowledge of the former Broadway locations have proved invaluable in merging the two organizations,” said Michael Steinberg, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s West. “She was able to integrate the best practices and create a team that merged the best talent from both companies.”
Scavarda was best known for her many years at The Broadway, which she joined in 1955 as a 17-year-old high school graduate who took a summer job to earn money for college.
Instead of going back to school, she moved through a succession of buying jobs before being named divisional merchandise manager for the parent Carter Hawley Hale Stores in 1979. Scavarda rose to senior vice president and general merchandise manager.
Scavarda said Thursday, “It’s just time for me to do my thing.”
