NEW YORK — Scoop boutiques are taking over Washington Street here.
A new Scoop offering just women’s apparel opened this week at 861 Washington Street, next door to the famed saloon Hogs & Heifers. The existing Scoop, at 873 Washington Street, will now carry just men’s wear. Come spring, 875 Washington Street will be home to Scoop Kids Starting Young, the first Scoop boutique devoted exclusively to children’s wear.
“We’re going to make up 60 percent of the block,” said Stefani Greenfield, co-owner of the Scoop boutiques.
The store at 861 Washington Street is 3,300 square feet and is constructed in typical Scoop style.
“All of our stores are loft-like with polished cement floors and stainless steel — a sleek New York look without being cold, ” Greenfield said. “It’s all about the merchandise for us. It’s like walking into the ultimate closet.”
The Meatpacking District ranks on retailers’ most-wanted real estate lists, but Greenfield said she has her partner, Uzi Ben-Abraham, to thank for scoring the desirable piece of real estate, home to shops like Stella McCartney, Jeffrey New York, and Alexander McQueen.
“Uzi is a real estate guru,” she said. “He was into the Meatpacking District for a long time. He has an unbelievable nose for real estate.”
This isn’t the first time Greenfield has almost taken over a city block. On the Upper East Side, Scoop occupies 6,000 square feet between 73rd and 74th Streets on Third Avenue with connecting women’s and men’s boutiques. The properties on Washington Street will occupy about the same square footage, but will not connect. Greenfield said her company’s average sales per square foot are “$1,500 plus.” The shop’s retail prices range from $28 to $2,000.
Greenfield opened women’s and men’s Scoop shops in Las Vegas last month and plans to open a store in Chicago this spring. “Same formula, different location,” she said.
