PARIS — Place Vendôme in Paris, the site of the prestigious Ritz hotel and all the major jewelry houses, was evacuated late this afternoon due to a fire in a parking lot housed under the square. The stores and upscale addresses that line the square are believed to be unharmed, but smoke was billowing from the center of the square and police had cordoned off the whole area and diverted traffic, causing chaos to add to the usual rush hour mayhem in the center of the city.
