MARKOO
DESIGNERS: Mona Koochek and Tania Martins
BACKGROUND: Martins, who learned to design clothes by apprenticing for several Toronto-based designers, also co-owned a boutique for seven years called Carte Blanche — since closed — which introduced designers like Gareth Pugh, Camilla Skovgaard and Jeremy Scott to the region. Koochek studied urban planning and environmental studies at York University and learned how to design under Martins’ guidance.
CONCEPT: Toronto-based advanced contemporary line of modern classics for cool girls, with equal parts darkness, sexiness and lots of leather.
LAUNCHED: Fall 2013
VISION: “We are always inspired by the downtown girl,” Koochek said. “She works downtown, dates downtown, eats downtown, lives downtown. We try to make the clothing very day-to-night. Without sounding cheesy, you can put a sneaker with this, or a stiletto with this…We want women to feel comfortable.”
PRICE RANGE: $200-$2,800 (for shearling and leather outerwear).
