J.C. Penney on Monday changed its senior management structure to streamline the merchandising and product development and design teams.
Following the April 1 retirement of Ken Mangone, executive vice president of product development, design and sourcing, the retailer’s chief merchant John Tighe will now oversee product development and design within the merchandising organization.
Mangone, who spent 39 years at J.C. Penney, will take on an advisory rule during the transition.

In her new role, Harris will oversee the more than 200 textile, technical and fashion designers based in New York and Plano, Tex., who translate trends and develop seasonal collections for Penney’s private brands. Harris will report to Tighe.
“Val is a trusted and highly respected member of the J.C. Penney team who, in her over 30 years at the company, has driven the product development and trend directions of many of our class-leading private and exclusive brands,” said Marvin R. Ellison, the company’s chief executive officer. “We are confident Val’s experience will allow us to continue delivering unmatched style, quality, and value – a high standard maintained by Ken Mangone in his many years of honorable service to the company.”
