PARIS — Carrefour SA confirmed today it was in talks with French supermarket operator Guyenne & Gascogne about a potential tie-up.
“Carrefour confirms that it is currently negotiating with Guyenne & Gascogne and certain of its shareholders on this potential combination,” Carrefour said in a statement.
“Carrefour would like to stress that no final decision has been taken and that there can be no assurance that any transaction will effectively take place,” it added.
The statement comes after French daily Le Figaro reported on Wednesday that Carrefour, the world’s second largest retailer behind Wal-Mart Stores Inc, was mulling a public share exchange offer for Guyenne & Gascogne, which operates Carrefour supermarkets in southwestern France.
