Gildan Activewear Inc. is the lone North American company in the Textiles, Apparel and Luxury Goods industry group to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for a second consecutive year.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices are maintained collaboratively by S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM. Following a best-in-class approach, the indices measure the performance of the world’s sustainability leaders. Companies are selected based on a comprehensive assessment of long-term economic, environmental and social criteria that account for general, as well as industry-specific, sustainability trends. Only organizations that lead their industries based on this assessment are included.
Gildan, based in Montreal, believes its corporate social responsibility initiatives create value for its various stakeholders, who have strong expectations relative to brands, especially in the apparel industry. Among its CSR initiatives are reductions in energy, water usage, greenhouse gas emissions and waste in its operations; integration of Fair Labor Association and Business Social Compliance Initiative methodology into its social compliance program and monitoring practices and tools, and a ban throughout its supply chain of using any cotton fiber originating from Uzbekistan due to the country’s use of child and forced labor.
