PLASTIC DREAMS: Looking to attract a younger consumer, Delvaux is turning to plastic.
Following a test run with last year’s Le Brillant X-Ray, the Belgian leather goods house has revisited its Tempête handbag, dating back to 1967, in a high-tech composite.
Made of blue PVC and TPU, a material normally used in extreme sports, the handbag dubbed Dark Night is meant to be “ultra-resistant and waterproof,” according to Delvaux’s creative director Christina Zeller, who is hoping to turn this into a recurring series. “Instead of doing cheap leather, we opted for high-quality plastic that would still remain affordable to a younger consumer,” the designer noted.
Produced in a limited edition of 1,200 pieces, the style will retail for 850 euros, or $947 at current exchange. “We don’t want this to become an ‘It’ bag, but create desire. Next year’s style — also a limited edition — is already in the works,” Zeller noted.

The bag is expected to go on sale on Monday at Delvaux’s own stores, while in the U.S. it will be exclusively available through four Barneys New York locations: Madison Avenue in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, Chicago and the retailer’s new Chelsea flagship slated to open next week.
