In mid-July, WWD polled 15 multibrand retailers on their current top-selling accessories. The results were varied. Though some stores were still moving full-price summer merchandise—Missoni for Havaiana flip-flops from Browns of London, for example—most were entrenched in pre-fall. In trend-driven news, a red-and-burgundy color story was sweeping handbag and shoe departments from Barneys to Printemps.
Yet trends weren’t really the point. On the whole, the survey turned up a considerable amount of familiar merchandise. Ballerina flats were on just about every list, while the Yves Saint Laurent Tribute sandal was still going strong at Net-a-porter, Harrods in London and Montaigne Market in Paris. Chloé’s Paraty handbag was big at Bloomingdale’s, Lane Crawford and Ginza Mitsukoshi. As Cody Kondo of Saks Fifth Avenue said, “We have the new materials, but it’s a balance. I always say, you have your cake, but you have to have your icing otherwise the cake is pretty boring.”
