It’s been a year of trade twists and turns in global commerce. With uncertainty around policy persisting, it has become even more challenging for apparel and textile firms to plan their procurement strategies.
The trade environment has an effect on the entire supply chain, including raw materials. Duties and trade deals influence sourcing location choices, while consumer spending trends trickle up to impact order volumes and the amount of fiber that flows into mills.
Providing a potential respite from added tariff costs, a rule announced alongside the reciprocal tariffs on “Liberation Day” this April gives U.S. content an exemption from the duties. If at least 20 percent of a product’s value comes from components produced or transformed in the U.S., then tariffs only apply to the portion of merchandise that originated elsewhere.
