Meet Unifi’s Minty Yarn Technology and T2T Expansion

Unifi has put some pep in its portfolio of anti-odor solutions.

The post-consumer plastic recycler and synthetic yarn manufacturer has expanded its textile-to-textile offerings with “A.M.Y.” Peppermint, a naturally deodorizing yarn engineered for long-lasting freshness.

Made with sustainably-sourced peppermint oil as a botanical alternative, the yarn is ideal for applications across apparel, footwear, home textiles and transportation. It’s available in both virgin and Repreve recycled polyester and can be combined with other performance technologies, too.

Unifi’s anti-odor technologies are inherent to the yarn and continuously block bacteria (likely found in armpits and feet) from growing on the fabric for what Unifi considers the product’s lifetime: 50 launderings. But since these antimicrobial properties are embedded into the fiber, the Repreve maker said it requires less frequent laundering—in turn, “giving your products a longer lifespan and a reprieve on the environment.”

On that note, Unifi shared an important distinction for consumers to consider.

“A.M.Y. technology does not protect the wearer from bacteria,” the company said. “Unifi Manufacturing, Inc. makes no health claims and assumes no liability for the product’s inability to meet any customer’s expectation of performance, durability or applicability for medical or any other use.”

On a macro-level, the latest addition to Unifi’s portfolio of anti-odor offerings (formerly comprising silver- or zinc oxide-based technologies, respectively) allows Unifi to meet the increasing (and sector-spanning) consumer demand for odor-resistant properties.

“This launch reinforces our commitment to sustainable innovation,” said Eddie Ingle, CEO of Unifi. “A.M.Y. Peppermint gives brands a powerful tool to deliver freshness and performance through the power of nature.”

Freshness aside, Unifi unveiled some trashy transformations, too.

The Greensboro, North Carolina, company (re)introduced its Repreve Takeback and Thermaloop insulation offerings as now made entirely from textile waste—excluding colorants, additives and low-melt polymers.

Repreve Takeback is Unifi’s proprietary recycling process to turn textile waste into Repreve recycled fibers, among other things. That’s powered by Textile Takeback, Unifi’s proprietary process for recycling textile waste into new materials, namely Repreve and Thermaloop insulation.

In combination with Unifi’s other yarn technologies, A.M.Y. Peppermint will be available globally. The vertically-integrated manufacturer will showcase these offerings at the Northwest Materials Show in Portland, Aug. 27-28 and at Intertextile Shanghai in China, Sept. 2-4.
