Prada Signs On to UN Global Compact

Prada has pledged its commitment to the United Nation’s Global Compact (UNGC) initiative.

The Italian luxury fashion house joins the likes of LectraAbercrombie & Fitch and Lululemon supplier Geno in joining the framework for corporate responsibility that protects human rights, supports labor, conserves the environment and opposes corruption.

Any action taken under the initiative contributes to and supports the UN’s principles, outlined in its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“By joining the UN Global Compact, the Prada Group strengthens its commitment to generate a more sustainable development, able to produce long-term value for the entire community in an effort to build the future we all want,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group’s head of corporate social responsibility. “Joining forces through synergies between players from different sectors, with shared and common objectives, is crucial to make real change happen.”

Launched in 2000, the UN Global Compact consortium comprises more than 15,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories throughout more than 160 countries and 70-plus local networks.

“We support the mission of the United States Global Compact to mobilize a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders to create the world we want,” the Miu Miu owner said in a statement.

In November, Bertelli was invited by UNESCO director general Audrey Azoulay to join the “Patron of the Ocean Decade Alliance,” a network of Ocean Decade partners that drum up support for the UN’s Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 through targeted resource mobilization, networking and influence.

Membership in the alliance is invite-only, based on dedication to the organization. Bertelli’s invite is based on “Prada Group’s support of ocean literacy through its Sea Beyond educational program and his personal vision and efforts to raise awareness of the vital role that the private sector can play in supporting ocean knowledge for sustainable development,” the company said.

“I am delighted to accept this invitation to further amplify Prada Group’s commitment to protecting our ocean, through educating new generations on ocean literacy principles,” Bertelli said. “As a Decade Patron, I intend to foster cooperation between private companies and institutions and serve as an example, so that our collective actions can generate a far greater impact.”

The news comes just days before Prada purchased the building on Fifth Avenue in New York City, which has been housing its NYC flagship since 1997, for a cool $425 million, Reuters reported.

“The board believes that the property’s location offers high strategic value being characterised by increasing scarcity and long-term potential,” the group said in a statement.
