Fashion’s pendulum swings again.
A recent report from Trendalytics reports that micro shorts—in an array of denim, leather, embellished and printed styles—saw a 68 percent increase in average weekly searches during the weeks of Coachella last month.
From boho to brat to western, micro shorts align with the season’s biggest trends. They were also sported on stage by the festival’s biggest acts including Tyla, who wore a pair of micro jean shorts trimmed with beaded fringe.
However, micro bottoms are a sharp contrast from last year’s cool girl ‘It’ item: Bermuda shorts. The knee-skimming shorts were a must-have fashion week item, paired with everything from kitten heels to riding boots, and a staple in collections from DL1961, AG, Frame and more.
Other key Coachella trends tracked by the trend intelligence platform were lace maxi skirts, baby tees—especially styles with edgy Y2K-inspired graphics—and lingerie slip dresses. Searches for chunky belts, which were often worn in multiples, were up 61 percent.
Leather and denim dominated trends at Stagecoach, the Indio, Calif. country music festival. Denim on denim was a go-to style, often including a cropped denim vest with denim micro shorts paired with boots, Trendalytics reported.
Lace shorts and bloomers—sweeter alternatives to micro shorts—picked up momentum at the event. Trendalytics said searches for the bottoms increased 41 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
Statement belts, turquoise jewelry and straw cowboy hats were some of the must-have western accessories.
Fringe is having a moment as well. Trendalytics reported that fringe boots and fringe handbags proved popular at Stagecoach and are “experiencing accelerated growth, especially as consumers are on the hunt for elevated western wear featuring fringe, buckles, and distressed leather.”
