Denim Deal, the European initiative committed to standardizing circular practices in denim production, is laying the foundation to scale textile recycling in India.
The public and private organization announced the launch of the India Denim Deal Hub, a new joint initiative with Global Alliance For Textile Sustainability Council (GATS) and Enviu Textiles focused on accelerating circularity in the Indian denim industry.
As one of the world’s largest denim producers, India has the capacity to drive significant change. Nicolas Prophte, Denim Deal board member, said India has the “potential to lead in fiber-to-fiber recycled cotton and shape a circular future for fashion.”
The India Denim Deal Hub is designed to foster collaboration across brands, manufacturers, startups, recyclers, and policymakers. It will serve as a platform to facilitate closed-loop denim production and support pre- and post-consumer waste recycling, while bringing together stakeholders from across the value chain to build shared infrastructure for circular solutions.
GATS is an industry-led nonprofit dedicated to advancing sustainability, circularity and innovation in the Indian textile sector, with a strong focus on supporting micro, small and medium enterprises. The organization helps stakeholders build and implement circular supply chains, works with governments to create policies that promote circularity, and provides education on sustainable manufacturing.
Enviu is a Bangalore-based non-profit venture-building studio that has promoted innovative, circular solutions across various industries since 2004. One of its ventures is ReTex, an initiative that collects old hotel linens and transforms them into new products through recycling and upcycling.
Together, Denim Deal said the hub a collaborative step forward for circular denim in India.
Launched in 2020 in Amsterdam, Denim Deal unites brands, manufacturers, recyclers and policymakers in its mission to catalyze the production of 1 billion pairs of jeans containing at least 20 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) cotton by 2030.
Denim Deal’s roster of partners include ZDHC, Iskur, Bossa, Sharabati, Realteks, Kipas, DNM, Maritas, Naveena, Calik and more. In March, the organization launched a campaign to grow its membership in France.
Members benefit from collaboration, education, exchanging information, action-driven pilots and workshops.
Additionally, Denim Deal recently announced a new partnership with World Collective, an online sourcing platform. World Collective will showcase a curated Denim Deal Collection, where buyers can easily explore certified circular denim suppliers. Users will also gain access to 3D material visualization tools to simplify sampling and product development.
