With Milan Fashion Week in full swing, Italian denim mill Candiani Denim is talking trends.
In a new blog post, the Coreva innovator shares the fits, colors and styling tricks that will renew denim fashion this year.
“Denim is set to reign supreme in 2025, and while we may sound a bit repetitive, the trend is undeniable. This year, denim is transforming, fusing cutting-edge styles with nostalgic touches that celebrate its rich history,” Candiani stated.
Though brands like Frame are preparing for a skinny jean comeback, Candiani anticipates wide-leg and baggy jeans to maintain their place as the most in-demand fits. “They provide a versatile look that can be adapted to various occasions and are a timeless and effortlessly chic option,” the mill stated.
Those options include palazzo styes with soft drapes to more structured and tailored fits. Baggy fits modeled after ’90s rigid denim are on the upswing as well, especially jeans made with deceptively soft and relaxed fabrics.
The popularity of roomy fits has created new opportunities for barrel jeans on and off the runway. The once-polarizing jean introduces new ways for designers and consumers to experiment with proportions.
“The jeans have a waistline that is significantly higher than that of traditional jeans, which creates a flattering and elongating effect. The jeans widen at the hips, reaching their maximum width—varying by style—at the knee before tapering back in at the ankle. This design results in a voluminous yet balanced and relaxed fit,” the mill said.
Kendrick Lamar’s positive effect on boot cut jeans cannot be ignored. Candiani said the celebrity-approved fit will likely trend prominently in the upcoming seasons.
With more extreme fits in high demand, Candiani said it will be essential to balance proportions. Think voluminous jeans paired with more fitted tops, such as crop tops, or skinny jeans teamed with an oversized blazer.
Belt will also be a factor. “Belts can be your best friend; a statement belt can instantly elevate your denim outfit. Experiment with different widths, colors, and textures to find the perfect match,” Candiani stated.
As brands step away from the quiet luxury trend cycle, color is taking on a greater importance in 2025.
Described as “symbols of sophistication,” Candiani said black, dark wash and raw denim will continue to be popular for their versatility. However, denim is embracing more adventurous colors like vibrant blues, greens, reds, and yellows that make a statement.
“Distressing techniques are also evolving, with a preference for refined details like subtle abrasions, delicate rips, and artful fading. These details contribute to a chic, lived-in appearance,” the mill stated.
Similarly, Candiani said unique treatments are making a strong comeback, with tie-dye, dip-dye, and acid wash adding playful and unexpected elements to denim. Two-tone washes that play with light and dark contrasts and metallic threads also elevate the basic jean.
