Archroma Tweaks Sustainable Dye Recipe to Make it More Cost-Effective

Archroma is taking a step to make one of its sustainable dye solutions accessible to more mills and brands.

The Swiss specialty chemical company unveiled Avitera SE Generation Next, a version of its Avitera SE technology with an improved cost-to-performance ratio for new dark and extra-dark shades.

The new product is a cost-effective sustainable dye solution for cellulosic fibers and blends. Archroma said the savings have been made possible through “recipe optimization and added environmental benefits.”

Avitera SE Generation Next addresses the challenges of dyeing darker shades, which the company said has traditionally been costly, calling for higher dye concentration, increased water and energy use, and additional steps or re-dyeing to achieve a uniform color. Darker shades also tend to fade more quickly than light-colored fabrics, especially when exposed to sunlight and repeated home laundering.

Avitera SE Generation Next allows mills to achieve water and energy savings of up to 50 percent and to reduce CO2 emissions and effluent discharge by up to 50 percent. The technology’s high-speed low-temperature wash-off, high process reliability and excellent reproducibility can increase mills’ output by up to 25 percent.

The dyes are free from arylamines and offer excellent fastness properties, retaining their vibrant colors through repeated home laundering and exposure to light, perspiration and chlorine, the company added.

“We have a taken a huge leap forward to make it possible to produce consistent and long-lasting dark and extra-dark shades in a more sustainable way at a total cost that is more comparable to traditional cellulosic dyeing technology,” said Dhirendra Gautum, Archroma Textile Effects VP of product marketing and strategy.

He added that products like Avitera SE Generation Next will help fashion and textile companies “sustain their financial viability.”

Archroma introduced Avitera SE in 2010 and has been expanding the range’s color palette over the year.

The company recently added three new colors. Avitera Black Pearl SE is a greenish-cast black dye. Avitera Blue Horizon SE is a deep blue with good light fastness in medium to deep shades. Avitera Night Storm SE is a new navy shade with a greenish cast. It is recommended for dyeing the deepest navy and combination shades.
