AI and Algorithms Inform Trim and Packaging Trends

Munich Fabric Start showcased Spring/Summer 2026 trend concepts last week, offering a peek into how consumers’ values and cultural factors will influence fashion down to the tiniest parts: trims.

Technology plays a large role in the direction of trim trends.

The theme “Inventing Paradise” juggles the complicated relationships consumers and companies have with nature and technology. “Artificial intelligence and new technologies are being used to protect and preserve our natural environments as well as enabling no longer existing paradises to exist on a virtual level,” the show stated.

This translates to trims by using materials, prints and styling that are inspired by nature and digital animation, resulting in the idea of cyber gardening. Hibiscus-shaped appliques, vine-like ropes and tropical floral and bird prints underscore the lush nature of the theme, while soothing ombre colors and translucent materials nod to tranquil retreats.

Key colors are Lavender Moon, Bitter Splash, Peach Pulp, Neon Plant and Algae Ink—hues that are seemingly plucked from nature and enhanced through a screen.

AI also inspires “Better Verse,” a theme that taps into the rapid pace of technology, especially related to biohacking, functional food and beauty products aimed to reverse the aging process.

For trims, this desire for a “holistically optimized” perfection, translates to metallic threads, matte and shine surfaces, transparency, whole punched materials, mesh and labels with minimalistic typography. Skin tone colors, gray-ish blues and powdery greens are popped against white, black and acidic citrus shades.

The theme “Fragile” allows consumers to “escape the sobriety of our modern worlds” through sensuality, cultural memories and personal mementos. The theme calls for dueling qualities to come together. “At the heart of this theme, we can see a mixture of modernity and nostalgia, strength and vulnerability, eroticism and restraint,” the show stated.

Linking the past to the future, trims have heirloom qualities. Delicate lace, layered chiffon and satin-like zipper tapes add a soft hand feel to trims, while trims with embossed florals and heart motifs underscore its romantic vibe.

“Unorthodox,” a trend that embraces weirdness and urges people to be their extreme self, is a bold contrast.

The theme taps into consumers’ instinct to question the algorithms that have seeped to their daily lives and rebel against mainstream ideas. “Offbeat proportions, radical breaks in style or a conscious rejection for perfection challenge us to adopt new perspectives,” the show stated.

In trends, this means louder colors like Fearless Red and Life-Life Balance Yellow as well color-clashing tartans, color blocked patches and contrast stitching. Colorful buttons and rivets and chunky zippers give hardware a fresh look

The trend has a playful side with tactile details like frayed and undone threads, bubble wrap-like surfaces and graffiti-style typography.
