Once upon a time, cities were brimming with visual indicators of which direction fashion would take next. Set to a continuous medley of sirens, horns and ice cream trucks, the mainstreaming of streetwear percolated on New York City streets for years. The kitschy and nostalgic designs that coin the “cottagecore” aesthetic was born and bred on the quaint cobblestone streets of Copenhagen. The cool kids of London’s Shoreditch nabe rediscovered the drama that head-to-toe leather exudes well before a carousel of luxury houses cashed in on the subversive look. This era of street style-inspired fashion will return one day, likely with a vengeance. Until that day comes, however, the quiet simplicity of the country provides the warmth, stability and sense of escapism that consumers are yearning for, both in their lives and in their closets.
