Can color be a reprieve from chaos?
Global consumer trend forecaster WGSN and color management system Coloro revealed their Fall/Winter 2027-2028 key colors for all industries. The palette responds to the overwhelming feeling of uncertainty consumers are experiencing by featuring colors that serve a greater purpose and reflect a sense of solace and restoration.
“As we globally continue to live through unpredictability and uncertainty, we see consumer emotion and feeling play a vital role in the [Fall/Winter 2027-2028] color selection. Each key color forms the basis for impactful color messaging, from feelings of freedom and expression to trust and groundedness,” said Clare Smith, WGSN senior color strategist.
The forecast features four colors—Russet, Peaceful Lilac, Maize and Deep Green—picked from Coloro’s library of over 3,500 hues.
Russet is natural red-brown pigment. Reminiscent of fertile land, autumn days and ripening fruit, WGSN said the earthy tone promotes “emotional stability during times of societal dysregulation.” Additionally, the red evokes reassurance and courage.
Though it has a futuristic quality, Peaceful Lilac also applies to consumers’ yearning for an altered state of consciousness and heightened sensory experiences. The pastel counterbalances the darker and mid-tones in the forecast.
Maize, a radiant yellow tone, is associated with joy and optimism. The color also stirs up imagery of grains and gold, which WGSN said is “both a nurturing and glamorous quality that speaks to the growing societal focus on respecting resources.”
Deep Green is an alternative to black. Described as luxurious and mysterious, the jewel tone has universal appeal and a utilitarian characteristic that aligns with industries’ gender-inclusive approach to design. WGSN adds that the color has “the haunting allure of nature’s wild essence,” which draw interest from consumers who “embrace empowerment and melancholy.”
WGSN and Coloro emphasized the accuracy of the forecast. Using Coloro tools, the WGSN team leveraged their expert knowledge and advanced methodology to uncover the future of color, providing insights with 93 percent accuracy.
“Coloro’s accurate and vibrant color standards continue to play a pivotal role in WGSN’s color selection and forecasting. Our commitment to helping brand leaders execute and communicate color across industries and materials has enabled us to streamline decision-making for global teams,” said Thorsten Traugott, VP of global sales at Coloro.
